How we work at Knihter

About Knihter

Technical specialists for WordPress, analytics, and digital platforms

Knihter is the technical arm of Ascedia, a Milwaukee digital marketing agency founded in 2000. We handle complex development work: custom WordPress builds, Google Analytics implementation, HubSpot integrations, and technical projects that require specialized expertise.

Based in Cedarburg, Wisconsin (minutes from Milwaukee), we work with clients nationwide who need technical depth beyond what typical marketing agencies provide.

The Team

We’re a small, senior-level team. No junior developers, no outsourcing. When you work with Knihter, you work directly with developers who have been building websites since the late 1990s.

Our expertise:

  • Custom WordPress development and theme architecture
  • Google Tag Manager and GA4 implementation
  • HubSpot development and CRM integration
  • Database design and API integrations
  • Performance optimization and technical SEO
  • WCAG accessibility compliance

We manage 60+ WordPress sites as a Pantheon Premier Partner and have built everything from university websites to manufacturing e-commerce platforms.

How We Work

Projects start with technical discovery, not sales pitches. We assess what you actually need, what can be improved versus what should be rebuilt, and what the real constraints are (budget, timeline, existing systems, team capabilities).

We work in staging environments with regular check-ins. Every update gets tested before going live. We maintain rollback capabilities. We document what we build.

Most projects run 6-16 weeks depending on scope. We provide fixed-price quotes after discovery, not estimates that balloon later.

What Sets Us Apart

Our History

With development experience dating back to 1996, we’ve worked through every major shift in web technology: the rise of CMSs, mobile-first design, responsive frameworks, modern JavaScript, headless architectures, and now AI integration.

This history informs how we evaluate new technology. We distinguish between genuine improvements and hype cycles. We build for longevity, not trends.

Ancient Scroll

Proven Innovation

Our lab highlights past projects that pushed boundaries and solved unique challenges, reflecting our drive to innovate early and understand the impact of new technology.

From pioneering mobile event apps for Milwaukee Summerfest to creating some of the first Google Glass applications, we’ve consistently been ahead of the curve.

Technology Partners

Pantheon – We’re a Premier Partner. All our WordPress sites run on Pantheon’s platform: containerized architecture, automatic backups, staging environments, object caching included, and enterprise-grade security.

Plytix – Certified implementation partner for their Product Information Management system. We connect Plytix to WordPress for manufacturers with complex product catalogs.

Google – Certified in Google Analytics and Tag Manager. We implement GA4, set up conversion tracking, build custom dashboards, and handle technical tracking requirements.

HubSpot – Certified partner. We build custom HubSpot modules, develop API integrations, create custom workflows, and handle technical HubSpot implementations.

What Makes Us Different

We write code. Most agencies install themes and plugins. We build custom solutions.

We optimize for the long term. We document everything, build for maintainability, and set you up to own your digital assets.

We’re honest about complexity. If a project is harder than you think, we tell you upfront. If you don’t need what you’re asking for, we suggest alternatives.

We’ve seen the full evolution of the web. This perspective helps us separate lasting solutions from temporary trends.

We’re small enough to care. You work directly with the people building your project, not account managers relaying messages to offshore developers.

Frequently Asked…

Here are some of the most common questions we get about our team and how we work.

What’s the relationship between Knihter and Ascedia?

Knihter is Ascedia’s WordPress and analytics team. We use the Knihter name to distinguish our technical specialization from Ascedia’s broader marketing services. Ascedia handles marketing strategy, creative, campaigns, and .NET development. Knihter handles WordPress, HubSpot, analytics, and custom integrations. Same company, different specializations.

Where are you located and who do you serve?

Our office is in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, about 20 minutes north of Milwaukee. We work with clients throughout Wisconsin and across the U.S. remotely. Most development work doesn’t require in-person meetings, though we’re available for Milwaukee-area clients who prefer that.

How big is your team?

Small. We’re senior-level specialists, not a large agency with multiple tiers of staff. You work directly with developers who have 20+ years of experience, not junior team members or outsourced contractors.

What does “Premier Partner” mean for Pantheon?

It means we’ve completed advanced certification, manage 60+ sites on their platform, and have direct access to their engineering team for complex issues. We know Pantheon’s architecture deeply and can leverage features most developers don’t use.

What industries do you specialize in?

We work across education, manufacturing, healthcare, professional services, and tourism. Each has specific technical requirements we understand: accessibility for education, configurators for manufacturing, compliance for healthcare, secure portals for professional services, booking systems for tourism.

What’s your typical project timeline?

Small projects (custom plugin, analytics setup): 1-3 weeks. Medium projects (custom theme, HubSpot integration): 6-10 weeks. Large projects (full custom website, complex e-commerce): 12-20 weeks. Enterprise implementations: 20-40 weeks. Timeline depends on scope, complexity, and how quickly content and requirements are finalized.

How much does it cost to work with Knihter?

We provide fixed-price quotes after discovery. No hourly billing that creates uncertainty. No surprise overages unless scope changes.

Do you provide ongoing support?

Yes. Most clients retain us monthly for updates, security monitoring, performance optimization, and troubleshooting. Support packages start at $500/month for basic sites and scale based on complexity and support needs. We also offer project-based support for clients with internal teams.

Can you work with our existing site or do you only do rebuilds?

We do both. If your current site can be improved through optimization, security updates, feature additions, or accessibility improvements, we work with what you have. If it’s built on outdated technology, locked down by a previous vendor, or structurally flawed, we recommend rebuilding.

What if we’re locked out by our previous developer?

We handle vendor lockout recovery. This includes regaining access to hosting accounts, transferring domains, recovering databases, and rebuilding sites when source code isn’t available. We’ve helped dozens of organizations escape vendor lock-in situations.

Do you work with our in-house developers?

Yes. We often work alongside internal development teams for projects requiring specialized expertise they don’t have in-house. We provide code documentation, training, and knowledge transfer so your team can maintain what we build.

What’s your approach to accessibility?

We build for WCAG 2.2 AA compliance from the start, not as an afterthought. This includes semantic HTML, ARIA implementation, keyboard navigation, screen reader optimization, and color contrast compliance. We can also audit and remediate existing sites. Many education and healthcare organizations legally require this.

What analytics platforms do you work with?

Primary focus is Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager. We also work with other Analytics services and custom analytics implementations. We set up conversion tracking, e-commerce tracking, custom events, cross-domain tracking, and build custom reporting dashboards.

What’s your development process?

Discovery and requirements documentation, technical architecture planning, development in staging environment with Git version control, regular client review checkpoints, comprehensive testing (functionality, performance, accessibility, security), staging site approval, production deployment, post-launch monitoring and optimization.

Can you take over a project from another developer?

Yes. We inherit projects regularly where previous developers left, went out of business, or where in-house teams need additional expertise. We audit existing code, document what’s been built, identify technical debt and security issues, and provide a roadmap for improvements or completion.

Ready to Work Together?

We’re not a good fit for everyone. We work best with organizations that:

  • Value technical quality over quick launches
  • Understand that good development takes time
  • Want to own their digital assets, not rent them
  • Are willing to invest in long-term solutions
  • Need specialized expertise, not general agency services

If that describes your situation, let’s talk.
